Welcome to All in the
Detail… I am so glad you are here!
Here is everything you ever needed to know about Staircases… well, at
least enough you need to know so that the next time you have work done on a staircase,
you will be prepared to converse like the Pros.
The image above
displays the correct angles and measurements (by code) for a series of steps
DID YOU KNOW:
There is an
actual legal code - a right and wrong way - to construct a staircase? Well… have
you ever walked up or down a flight of stairs that seems to be out of
proportion, you aren’t quite sure if you should be taking one or two steps on
each landing? i.e. Wrong for today’s standards. Actually, older constructed
stairs are completely different in measurements and angles than today’s
construction and some of those staircases that you have been ‘stumbling’ up and
down on may just not have been up to date by today’s codes.
DID YOU KNOW:
A staircase (stairway,
stairwell, or flight of stairs) is a construction designed to bridge a large
vertical distance (floors in a home or building) by dividing it into smaller
vertical distances, called steps.
DID YOU KNOW:
A step is composed of a tread
and a riser
DID YOU KNOW:
The tread is the part of the
stairway that is stepped on. It is constructed to the same specifications
(thickness) as any other flooring. The tread "depth" is measured from
the outer edge of the step to the vertical "riser" between steps. The
"width" is measured from one side to the other.
DID YOU KNOW:
The riser is the vertical portion
between each tread on the stair. This may be missing for an "open"
stair effect.
DID YOU KNOW:
There are as many (plus more) styles of staircases as there are Design Styles? And since I am a Traditionalist when it comes
to my own home style… I thought I would share a few Traditional Staircase images…
Enjoy!
