A SALUTE TO ALL WHO HAVE SERVED OUR COUNTRY
Day of Days. The day Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy and began their hard-won liberation of Europe .
In the military,
D-Day is the day on which a combat attack or operation is to be
initiated. The best known D-Day is June 6, 1944—the day of the Normandy landings—initiating the Western Allied effort to
liberate mainland Europe from Nazi occupation
during World War II. However, many other invasions and operations had a
designated D-Day, both before and after that operation.
The
Normandy landings (code
named Operation Neptune) were the
landing operations on 6 June 1944
of the Allied invasion
of Normandy in Operation
Overlord during World
War II.
The
largest seaborne invasion in history, the operation began the invasion of
German-occupied Western Europe, led to the
liberation of France
from Nazi control, and contributed to an Allied victory in the war.
