a new jersey estate of mind

33549-353516-luxesource-com-by-luxe-interiors-design-magazine

You know how I have mentioned (on, yes, more than one occasion) that LUXE interior + design is hands down MY FAVORITE DESIGN MAGAZINE? Well, they are and it is because they never cease to amaze me with their finds of the most perfect interiors for me to oohhhh and ahhh over… And guess what? They did it again with this one.

THE EXTERIOR OF THE HOME

Twelve years ago, the search for a place to raise their two children led a New York woman and her lawyer husband to a quaint country lane in western New Jersey that meandered through an old 13-acre estate property. The mature trees, the greenswards, the views...well, it was love at first sight. Then the house came into view and, recalls the architecturally trained wife, her entire spirit heaved an underwhelmed “Oh.” (I can totally relate to this woman!)

Dourly draped in brown siding, with a green asphalt roof, “the house lacked the obvious—a cedar roof, white-painted cedar shingles and Palladian windows,” she says. Nevertheless, they bought it and moved in. Immediately she stripped the interiors of dreary wallpapers and tried to make their furniture fit. Then a few years ago, on a mission to find a small table, she wandered into designer Matthew Frederick’s storefront studio and shop in Far Hills, New Jersey. “It was a breath of fresh air,” she says. “I immediately called a friend and said, ‘I’ve found my designer. This is my house!’ ” (She even realizes that the right designer can make a world of difference… I SO love her!) Soon after coming over for a look, says Frederick, “we were doing an entire gut. I’ve touched every room of the house.”

quick tip: measurements for window treatments

Measuring for Curtains_thumb[4]

Here is a quick easy reference for the height, length, and fullness of any window treatment. (some of you may have seen this before, it is my tried and true reference for window measurements!)

The Height and Length of Window Treatment
Many designers prefer to hang curtains as high as possible - usually just below the crown molding - to make ceilings feel taller and elongate the profile of the window. But in some cases, with high ceilings or low windows, that can be too high.
Curtains should generally be floor-length unless they're casual curtains in a kitchen or café curtains. Most designers prefer curtains to just touch the floor, with a small, perhaps half-inch, break.

The Proper Fullness for Window Treatments
Fullness depends somewhat on the fabric and the style of pleats. The rule of thumb for most fabrics is that the finished curtains measure two-and-a-half times the width of the window, but for sheers and silk, designers often prefer three times for fullness.
Box pleats generally require fabric three times the length of the curtain rod for the correct fullness, while a flatter style of panel, like a scalloped top or grommet panel may need only one-and-a-half times the curtain rod length

eenie… meenie… mynie... mantle

Mantles are a delightful addition to any fireplace. They can be simple and inherently natural, or elaborate and fabricated. Whether made from timber, stone, plaster or synthetic material, mantels just have a certain type of appeal and always cozy.
By the way: Do you know the difference between a Mantel and a Hearth?
Mantel: noun \ˈman-təl\
1. a: the shelf above a fireplace
2. a:  a beam, stone, or arch serving as a lintel to support the masonry above a fireplace
b:  the finish around a fireplace
Hearth: noun \ˈhärth\
1. a: the floor in front of or inside a fireplace
2. a:  a brick, stone, or concrete area in front of a fireplace
b:  the floor of a fireplace

Here's just a few great examples of mantels
